Finding detailed recommendations of places to stay in Britain is, to our minds, something of a lottery. Hopefully friends, family and work colleagues will recommend places but this is largely dependent on having the same criteria to fulfil - be it children, dogs or even 'oldies' accompanying you.
Of course there are many holiday review websites available to search but in our experience you find yourself fighting through all the more 'exciting' destinations (Cuba anyone?), before you find someone prepared to concede that their holiday cottage in Devon was 'nice'!
Detailed and glowing feedback can often be found on the websites of individual properties but this is entirely dependent upon you being lucky enough to hit on that particular website amongst the 100,000+ results Google returns for 'UK self-catering holidays' alone.
Inspectors, travel journalists and 'experts' all have their say but to our mind there is no one better placed to recommend a place than someone who has actually stayed there and not just ticked the boxes. They've slept in the beds, stood under the shower and almost certainly wandered down to the local pub. They KNOW what it's like.
We've decided to stick to recommendations as opposed to simply 'reviews' as we feel this information is more relevant. After all, browsing pages and pages of where not to stay doesn't really help you find what you're looking for.
Also, we think it's important that guests get the opportunity to recommend all types of properties - not just the very special or upmarket ones. If you've had a positive experience, let us know - whether it was a stay at a luxurious 5* retreat, or a modest, rustic dwelling, as long as it met or exceeded your expectations, it deserves recommending to others.
We know it's not very fashionable to post nice stuff on the internet, but as we're far more 'dog hairs & Guernsey' than Dolce & Gabbana we hope that you will join in to make the site a useful tool to anyone who loves exploring this fabulous country of ours as much as we do. So, if you have just returned from a fortnight of rain with your mother-in-law and her dodgy hip, may we recommend you try 'HolidaysRHell' instead? We don't 'do' vented spleens at The Real Visitors Book - far too messy and play havoc with your keyboard
